Working with Denim: Needles, Thread, Topstitching, and Pressing for Jeans
Denim is heavy, dense, and surprisingly demanding. Here's how to handle it on a home sewing machine — needle choice, thread, machine settings, and the topstitching that makes jeans look like jeans.
Denim looks straightforward — a sturdy cotton twill, woven tightly, dyed indigo. In practice it’s one of the more demanding fabrics for a home machine. The weight breaks needles. The seams cross over each other at thicknesses regular machines weren’t built for. The topstitching that gives jeans their character requires specific thread and tension. Skip the right preparation and your machine grinds, your needles snap, and your stitches skip.
But none of this is unsolvable. With the right needle, the right thread, and a few small machine adjustments, denim sews well on most modern home machines. This guide covers what those adjustments are, how to plan a denim project, and where the bottlenecks usually appear.
What “denim” actually is
Denim is a cotton twill — typically 100% cotton, with a diagonal weave pattern visible up close. Indigo dye on the warp threads (the lengthwise yarns) and undyed weft (crosswise yarns) gives the classic blue-on-white-back appearance.
Weight matters more than you’d expect. Denim ranges from:
- Lightweight (4–7 oz/sq yd, ~135–235 g/m²): shirts, dresses, lighter jeans for warm weather.
- Mid-weight (8–11 oz, 270–370 g/m²): standard jeans, jackets, durable everyday wear.
- Heavyweight (12–16 oz, 405–540 g/m²): workwear, raw selvedge jeans, jackets meant to last decades.
- Beyond 16 oz: specialty raw denim. Most home machines struggle here.
Mid-weight is the realistic target for first denim projects. Heavyweight is for sewers with experience and machines that can handle it.
A few related terms:
- Stretch denim: regular denim with a small percentage of elastane (typically 1–3%) for added comfort. Most modern jeans use this.
- Selvedge denim: denim woven on traditional shuttle looms with a clean self-finished edge. Premium product.
- Chambray: looks denim-like but is a plain weave (not twill) — much lighter, much easier to sew.
Pre-treating denim
Denim shrinks. Sometimes dramatically — 5–10% on raw denim, even more on certain weights. Wash and dry your denim the way you’ll launder the finished garment, twice if you’re being careful.
Be aware of dye crocking — the indigo dye transfers to other fabric, your hands, your machine, and your iron. Wash separately the first time. Some sewers report indigo staining on light-coloured surroundings; if that’s a concern, work on dark fabric or paper protectors.

Needles for denim
Universal needles will struggle. Use a denim/jeans needle.
These have:
- Reinforced shaft to handle the stress of dense fabric.
- Sharper, more tapered point to penetrate the tight weave.
- Larger eye to accommodate heavier thread.
Sizes by denim weight:

Replace the needle frequently. Denim dulls needles faster than other fabrics — every 4–6 hours of stitching is realistic. A dull needle on denim is what produces skipped stitches and seam puckering.

Thread for denim
Two threads are involved in jeans construction:
Construction thread
Standard all-purpose polyester thread (Gütermann Sew-All, Coats Dual Duty, or similar) for the actual seams. The strength is fine; you don’t need anything heavier for the structural sewing.
Topstitching thread
The visible orange or gold stitching on jeans is topstitching thread — typically 30 or 40 weight (heavier than the 50 weight standard sewing thread). The signature “jeans” look comes from this thicker thread sitting on the surface of the dense fabric.
Brands: Gütermann Topstitching Thread, Coats Dual Duty Plus Topstitching, Mettler Cordonnet, or specialty jeans thread from Closet Core or Threads & Co.
Use topstitching thread only in the needle, not the bobbin. The bobbin gets regular thread. Trying to use topstitching thread in both creates massive tension issues. The needle thread is the only one that needs to be visible.
You’ll also need a larger needle eye to accommodate the thicker thread — a 100/16 denim needle (or sometimes a topstitching-specific needle) is the standard.
Machine settings for denim
A few changes from your defaults:
Stitch length
Slightly longer than usual: 3.0–3.5 mm. Long stitches lie better on dense fabric and look more like commercial jeans.
Topstitch length
Even longer for visible topstitching: 3.5–4.0 mm. The longer stitches make the topstitching thread more visible and consistent.
Tension
Likely needs to be loosened slightly when using topstitching thread (heavier thread requires less upper tension to balance). Test on a denim scrap first.
Walking foot if available
Long denim seams (especially when crossing other seams) drift more than they should under a regular foot. A walking foot keeps the layers aligned. Our walking foot guide covers when and how.
Sewing the bulky seams
Where home machines fail on denim is at seam intersections — the points where one seam crosses another and the thickness multiplies. A standard pair of jeans has 6+ layers of denim at the side-seam-meets-yoke point. Most home machines can sew through 4–6 layers; beyond that, you may stall, break needles, or skip stitches.
Tactics:
“Walk” your needle through thick spots
Hand-crank the wheel through thick intersections, stitch by stitch. The motor doesn’t have the torque your hand does. Slow, deliberate stitches make it through where powered stitching fails.
Use a hump jumper (or magazine cover, or fabric scraps)
A “hump jumper” is a small wedge-shaped block that sits behind the presser foot when you’re going over a thick seam. It keeps the foot level so the feed dogs can grip the fabric properly. A folded magazine cover works as a substitute. Without it, the foot tilts as it leaves the thick seam, the back of the foot lifts, the fabric stops feeding, and you sew in place — leaving a clump of stitches.
Hammer the seam intersections flat first
Before sewing a cross-seam, place the seam intersection on a hard surface and hit it with a hammer or wooden mallet a few times. Sounds barbaric; it works. Compresses the layers so they’re more like 4 layers than 6.
Trim seam allowances
If a seam is going to cross another, trim its allowance shorter (1 cm instead of 1.5 cm) to reduce bulk at intersections.
Press carefully
Pressing seams flat (or staggered, with one side trimmed shorter than the other so the bulk is distributed unevenly) reduces total thickness at intersections. See our pressing techniques guide for more.
Topstitching denim
Topstitching is what makes jeans look like jeans. The technique:
Use the right thread (in needle only)
Topstitching thread in the needle, regular polyester thread in the bobbin.
Use the right needle
100/16 denim or topstitching-specific needle with a large eye.
Run a test on scrap
Adjust tension until the stitches lie flat on top without puckering, and the bobbin thread doesn’t pull through. Test on the same number of layers as your real seam.
Stitch slowly
Faster speeds break topstitching needles more often. Moderate speed is the right pace.
Two parallel rows for the classic look
Most jeans have two parallel topstitching rows, about 5–8 mm apart. Some sewers use a twin needle (which produces two perfect parallel rows automatically); others sew each row separately, using the edge of the presser foot as a guide for the second row’s distance.
A twin needle gives the cleanest look but requires re-threading and tension adjustment. Two separate rows take longer but allow flexibility.
Backstitch carefully
Topstitching backstitches are visible. To hide them, leave thread tails when starting and stopping, then thread them through to the wrong side and tie off. More work, but cleaner result.
Hemming denim
The classic mistake: hemming jeans without considering the original hem.
The original hem on store-bought jeans
If you’re shortening jeans, you face the dilemma of preserving the original distressed hem (the visible faded line where the hem was) or producing a clean new hem.
Two options:
Original hem method
Cut the jeans much shorter than the desired length, then sew a tube above the hem to remove length without removing the original hem. The faded line ends up at the new bottom edge. Looks intentional; preserves the distressed look.
Tutorials abound online for this technique. It’s the standard for shortening designer jeans you don’t want to lose the original character of.
Standard re-hem
Cut the jeans 3 cm above the desired finished length. Fold up 1 cm, fold up 2 cm, press, and topstitch with topstitching thread. The hem looks new (no fading line) but is clearly machine-hemmed.
For homemade jeans, this is the only option. Press carefully and use topstitching thread to match the rest of the garment.
Pressing denim
Denim takes pressing well. Use:
- High heat (cotton setting).
- Plenty of steam.
- Press cloth not strictly necessary but helps prevent shine on raw denim.
Press seams flat, then to one side (usually toward the centre back). Topstitched seams stay locked once topstitched, so pre-pressing doesn’t matter as much as on other fabrics.
Common denim sewing problems
Skipped stitches
Most often: dull needle. Replace with a fresh denim needle. If problem persists, check thread compatibility (topstitching thread in bobbin breaks tension) and tension settings.
Broken needles
Usually from forcing the machine through thick intersections. Slow down, walk the needle by hand through thick spots, use a hump jumper.
Bobbin thread shows through
Tension imbalance from heavy topstitching thread. Loosen upper tension; test on scrap.
Machine stalls or grinds
Too many layers for your machine. Trim seam allowances, hammer flat, walk by hand. If your machine consistently fails on cross-seams, your machine isn’t strong enough for jeans-weight denim — consider a heavier-duty model (Singer Heavy Duty 4423, Janome HD3000, or industrial-style models).
Visible needle holes
When you unpick a denim seam, the needle holes remain visible. Plan first-time seam placement carefully — re-sewing isn’t always invisible.
Denim project recommendations by skill level
- Beginner: tote bag in mid-weight denim. The denim weight feels different, but the project is simple and short.
- Intermediate: denim skirt or shirt. Introduces denim seam construction at a manageable scale.
- Advanced beginner: jeans (Closet Core’s Ginger Jeans pattern is the standard recommendation).
- Advanced: tailored denim jacket, upcycled vintage jean reconstruction.

Closing thought
Denim is a benchmark fabric. Sewing a clean pair of jeans separates beginners from intermediate sewers, and the skills required — handling thick seams, using topstitching thread, managing layers — transfer to leather, canvas, and upholstery work later.
Don’t try denim as your first or second project. Build the underlying skills (straight seams, accurate cutting, pressing, topstitching) on lighter fabric first. When you’re ready, denim rewards careful work with garments you’ll wear for years.
