What Is a Walking Foot and When Should You Use One?

A walking foot adds a second set of feed dogs above the fabric, preventing layers from shifting during sewing. Here's what it does, when it helps, and how to use one.

A walking foot is a specialty presser foot that has its own set of feed dogs on top of the fabric — moving in sync with the machine’s regular feed dogs underneath. The result: both fabric layers are pulled through the machine at exactly the same rate, instead of the bottom layer sliding ahead while the top layer drags behind.

It’s a niche tool that solves a specific problem. For some kinds of sewing, it’s transformative. For most beginner projects, it’s unnecessary. Knowing when to reach for one is the difference between a clean seam on tricky fabric and three hours of fighting your machine.

The problem a walking foot solves

When you sew two layers of fabric on a regular sewing machine, only the bottom layer is being actively pulled through by the feed dogs. The top layer is held in place by the presser foot but moved forward only by friction with the bottom layer. Most of the time, this works fine — the two layers move together because the friction is enough.

But on certain fabrics, the friction breaks down:

  • Slippery fabrics (silk, satin, polyester) slide between the layers as you sew. By the end of a long seam, the top layer is several centimetres further forward than the bottom — and the seam line has wandered.
  • Plush or pile fabrics (velvet, faux fur, fleece) creep similarly because the pile creates uneven friction.
  • Stretchy knits behave unpredictably as one layer stretches more than the other.
  • Quilted layers (top fabric + batting + backing) shift relative to each other.
  • Multiple thick layers (bag construction, denim seams that cross other seams) bind up under a regular foot.

A walking foot eliminates this by feeding both layers at the same rate.

How a walking foot works

A walking foot has two parts:

  1. An upper feed mechanism with its own set of feed dogs, mechanically synchronized to the machine’s lower feed dogs.
  2. An attachment arm that connects to the needle bar, transferring the up-and-down motion of the needle into the back-and-forth motion of the upper feed dogs.

When the needle goes up, the upper feed dogs lift slightly. When the needle goes down, the upper feed dogs press onto the fabric. As the lower dogs move backward (advancing the fabric), the upper dogs move backward in sync.

The result is “walking” — the foot looks like it’s walking forward step by step as you sew. Both layers advance together with no slipping.

When to use a walking foot

The clear use cases:

Quilting

Machine quilting (sewing through quilt top, batting, and backing) is the textbook walking foot job. Without one, the quilt’s three layers shift, the batting bunches, and the quilt distorts into a parallelogram by the end of the seam. With a walking foot, the layers stay flat and the quilting lines stay parallel.

For straight-line quilting, walking foot. For free-motion quilting, you switch to a darning foot.

Sewing slippery fabric

Silk, satin, polyester crepe, polyester chiffon. A walking foot keeps the layers from sliding past each other. Fine fabrics that previously seemed unsewable on a regular machine become manageable.

Sewing thick or multi-layer projects

Bag construction (especially with structural interfacing), denim with stress points, layered hems on heavy fabrics. The walking foot prevents the layers from binding up at thick seam crossings.

Velvet and pile fabrics

The pile creates uneven friction that twists fabric out of alignment as you sew. A walking foot resolves this — both layers move at exactly the same rate, regardless of pile direction.

Knits (sometimes)

For lighter knits and small projects, the regular foot handles knits adequately. For large knit garments where stretching is a concern, a walking foot helps. Pair with a ballpoint needle and stretch stitch (covered in our needle and thread guide).

Matched-stripe seams

Topstitching long seams

When topstitching is decorative and visible, you want it perfectly straight. A walking foot keeps the line parallel even on long seams.

When NOT to use a walking foot

Walking feet aren’t always the right choice.

Most regular cotton wovens

Quilting cotton, poplin, broadcloth — friction between layers is enough to hold them together on a regular foot. Adding a walking foot adds noise and bulk for no benefit.

Curves

Walking feet work best on straight or gently curved seams. Sharp curves (necklines, princess seams) are awkward — the feed mechanism doesn’t pivot well. Use a regular foot.

Topstitching close to an edge

The walking foot’s mechanism makes it harder to see the seam line precisely. For topstitching that needs to be exactly 5 mm from an edge, a regular foot or specialized edge-stitching foot is better.

Free-motion quilting or embroidery

Walking feet only feed in straight lines. Free-motion work needs feed dogs dropped and a specialized foot. Don’t try to free-motion with a walking foot installed.

Buttonholes

Use a buttonhole foot, not a walking foot.

Inserting zippers

Use a zipper foot.

Choosing a walking foot

Two main types:

Brand-specific walking foot

Made by your machine’s manufacturer to fit perfectly. Bernina has its own; Janome has its own; Pfaff machines have a built-in IDT (Integrated Dual Transport) system that essentially makes every foot work like a walking foot.

Pros:

  • Designed exactly for your machine.
  • Uniform fit.
  • Often higher quality.

Cons:

  • Expensive ($60–150 typically).

Universal walking foot (low-shank)

Generic walking feet that fit most low-shank machines (Brother, Singer, Janome, etc.). Sold for $15–40 in third-party brands.

Pros:

  • Cheap.
  • Available widely.

Cons:

  • Quality varies. Cheap ones can be noisy or imprecise.
  • May not align perfectly with your machine.

For occasional use, a universal walking foot in the $20–30 range is fine. For frequent use (an avid quilter, a sewer working with knits all the time), the brand-specific foot is worth the price difference.

How to install a walking foot

Most walking feet attach in two steps:

  1. Remove the existing presser foot (and the foot ankle, on some machines — the part the foot clips onto).
  2. Attach the walking foot in its place. The attachment is usually screw-on, with a thumbscrew that holds the foot in place.
  3. Position the attachment arm so it loops over the needle bar’s screw clamp. This is the part that drives the upper feed mechanism.
  4. Lower the needle to verify the arm engages the screw and moves with it.

Each machine has slight differences. Read your machine’s manual or the foot’s instructions.

Tips for using a walking foot

Lower the needle slowly first

Hand-crank the needle down once before starting the seam. Verify the walking foot mechanism engages cleanly with the needle bar.

Sew at moderate speed

Walking feet work best at moderate speeds — fast enough that the mechanism cycles smoothly, slow enough that you can guide the fabric. Maximum speed isn’t ideal.

Don’t pull or push the fabric

The walking foot does the feeding. Pulling the fabric stretches it; pushing causes the layers to bunch. Just guide.

Use appropriate stitch length

Standard stitch length (2.5 mm) works for most situations. Shorter (2.0 mm) for fine fabric; longer (3.0–3.5 mm) for quilting.

Stop and re-position cleanly

If you need to stop mid-seam, lower the needle into the fabric before lifting the presser foot — keeps the layers aligned. Sergers and walking foot machines benefit equally from this discipline.

Common walking foot problems

The mechanism doesn’t engage

The attachment arm isn’t looped over the needle bar correctly. Check the install.

The seam pulls or skips stitches

Bad needle (replace it), wrong needle type for fabric, or thread tension off. None are walking foot specific.

The foot is noisy

Walking feet are inherently louder than regular feet — the mechanism makes audible clacking. Excessive noise (grinding, screeching) suggests installation issues or worn mechanisms; check.

The fabric still drifts

Low-quality universal walking feet sometimes don’t apply enough pressure to the upper layer. The brand-specific foot for your machine usually solves this. If you’re using one and the issue persists, your fabric or thread combination might be the problem rather than the foot.

A note on integrated dual feed (IDT, AccuFeed)

Some machines have built-in dual feed systems:

  • Pfaff IDT (Integrated Dual Transport): a permanent dual feed mechanism that engages with most presser feet. Pfaff’s signature feature.
  • Janome AccuFeed: a similar concept, available on some Janome models.

If your machine has one of these, you don’t need a separate walking foot — the dual feed is always available with most feet. If you’re shopping for a new machine and you sew a lot of slippery, layered, or quilted material, an IDT-equipped Pfaff is worth a serious look.

Closing thought

A walking foot solves one specific problem — fabric layers slipping during stitching — and it solves it well. For sewers who don’t have that problem, the foot is unnecessary. For sewers who do, especially quilters and those working with slippery fabric or multiple thick layers, it’s transformative.

If you’re starting out, you don’t need a walking foot. Wait until you’ve encountered the slipping problem on a real project and felt the frustration; then buy one.
