Serger Buying Guide: Do You Need an Overlocker?
A serger (overlocker) finishes raw fabric edges with a wrapped overlock stitch. Useful — but not always necessary. Here's whether to buy one, what to look for, and which models to consider.
A serger (called an “overlocker” in British English) is a separate sewing machine that finishes raw fabric edges with a wrapped overlock stitch — the kind of professional finish you see inside ready-to-wear clothing. It uses 3 or 4 threads simultaneously, runs much faster than a regular sewing machine, trims excess fabric as it sews, and handles knit fabric beautifully.
Sergers are often pitched to home sewers as essential. They’re not. A regular sewing machine handles all garment construction; a serger only changes how raw edges are finished and how knits are stitched. The question is whether the upgrade is worth the cost and shelf space for your specific sewing goals.
This guide covers what a serger actually does, when it’s worth buying, what to look for, and concrete recommendations across price tiers.
What a serger does (and doesn’t)
A serger is a single-purpose machine. It does three things:
- Wraps the raw edge of fabric with a thread overlock so the edge can’t fray.
- Sews the seam line at the same time (typically with a chain stitch) so the seam is constructed and finished in one pass.
- Trims excess fabric as it sews, with a built-in blade just before the needles.
What it does NOT do:
- Replace a sewing machine. Sergers can’t sew a single straight stitch, can’t backstitch, can’t sew a buttonhole, can’t topstitch, can’t sew zippers. You still need a regular machine.
- Sew anywhere except along an edge. Sergers can only stitch along the cut edge of fabric (the blade trims as you go). They can’t sew an interior seam, a centred zipper, or a topstitched pocket.
- Hem cleanly without an additional finish. A serged edge alone isn’t a finished hem — most hems are then folded and topstitched on a regular machine.
The role of a serger is to finish, not to replace.
Who actually benefits
A serger genuinely improves work for sewers who:
- Sew knits regularly. Knit fabrics behave better on a serger — less stretching, cleaner seams, faster construction. If at least half your projects are T-shirts, leggings, jersey dresses, or other knits, a serger justifies itself.
- Sew large quantities of similar items. Quilters, garment-batch sewers, kids’ clothing makers all benefit from serger speed.
- Make woven garments where the inside is visible. Sheer or unlined garments look more professional with serged seams than zigzagged ones. Though French seams (covered in our French seam tutorial) achieve a similar finish without a serger.
- Sew children’s wear. Lots of seams, lots of knits, lots of edges to finish.
If none of these describe you, a regular machine’s zigzag stitch substitutes for the serger’s main function (finishing raw edges) and you can defer or skip a serger entirely.
Sewers who probably don’t need one
- New sewers in their first year. Master a regular machine first.
- Sewers focused on woven garments. Wovens can be finished with French seams, bound seams, zigzag, pinking shears, or simply left if the seam is hidden inside a lining.
- Quilters. Most quilting doesn’t require an overlock finish.
- Sewers tight on space. A serger needs its own dedicated table or surface — moving it on and off a single table for each project is impractical.
- Sewers tight on budget. $300–600 for a serger is meaningful money. That budget might be better spent on a better main machine, more fabric, or pattern subscriptions.
How threading works (and why it matters)
A serger uses 2–4 threads simultaneously. Threading a 4-thread serger involves:
- Two needles (with a needle thread each).
- An upper looper (a curved metal arm above the throat plate).
- A lower looper (a curved metal arm below).
Threads must follow specific paths and be threaded in a specific order — typically lower looper first, upper looper second, right needle third, left needle fourth. Threading errors are why sergers have a reputation as intimidating machines.
Modern sergers handle threading in different ways:
- Manual threading: cheaper sergers require you to thread each path by hand. A skilled user does this in 5–10 minutes; a beginner takes 20–30 minutes the first few times.
- Air threading (Juki, Babylock): blow air through the looper paths to thread automatically. Significantly faster and easier — but increases the price by $300+.
- Self-threading (Babylock’s Jet-Air): even more automated. The most expensive option.
For a beginner, the cheapest manual-threading serger is fine — threading speed improves with practice. For a busy semi-professional, air threading is worth it.
What to look for
Differential feed
A control that adjusts the speed of the front and rear feed dogs independently. Used to prevent stretching on knits (stretchy fabric tends to lengthen during stitching) or to gather lightly. Almost any modern serger has this.
Adjustable cutting width
Determines how much fabric is trimmed off as you sew. Some sergers have multiple width settings; cheaper ones are fixed. Adjustable width is useful but not essential.
Adjustable stitch length
Lets you set the spacing of the overlock stitches. Shorter for fine fabric, longer for thicker. Standard on most modern sergers.
Three-thread vs four-thread
- 3-thread overlock: one needle, two loopers. The basic finish for most fabrics. Lighter, smaller stitches.
- 4-thread overlock: two needles, two loopers. A second line of stitching for stronger seams. Better for knits where seam strength matters.
A modern serger usually offers both — switching between them by removing one needle. 4-thread is more versatile.
Free arm
A removable section of the bed for sewing tubular pieces (sleeves, leg cuffs). Common but not universal.
Quality of light
Sergers run at high speeds and require good visibility. Built-in LED lighting helps significantly.
Roll hem capability
A specialty stitch that produces a narrow rolled hem in one pass. Useful for napkins, scarves, and lightweight garments. Most modern sergers can do this with a simple setting change.
What features don’t matter
- Embroidery functions. Sergers don’t do embroidery. If a “combination” machine claims to do both, expect mediocrity at both.
- Computerized stitch libraries. Most useful sergers are mechanical. Computerized sergers exist but rarely justify the premium.
- More than 5 threads. Some specialty industrial models go higher; they’re not for home use.
Recommended sergers by tier
These are general recommendations as of early 2026; specific models update annually.
Entry-level ($250–400) — first-time serger
- Brother 1034D: The most-recommended beginner serger. 3/4 thread, manual threading, free arm, differential feed. Reliable and widely available.
- Singer S0700/S0100: Similar tier to the Brother. Adequate, if slightly noisier.
- Janome MyLock 644D: Slightly higher quality build than the Brother for a small price premium.
The Brother 1034D is the default choice for home sewers buying their first serger. It does everything most home users need, costs reasonable money, and has decades of reviews to back it up.
Mid-range ($500–800) — quality upgrades
- Janome 9300DX / 8002D: Better build, smoother operation, easier threading.
- Brother ST4031HD: Heavy-duty version for sewers working with thick fabrics frequently.
- Singer ProFinish 14CG754: Bigger workspace and better motor than entry-level Singers.
The mid-range buys you better stitch quality, longer machine life, and slightly easier threading.
Higher-end ($800–1500) — serious hobby or semi-pro
- Babylock Imagine: Air-threading. Significantly easier to thread than manual machines.
- Juki MO-1000: Air-threading with 1500 stitches per minute. The semi-pro standard.
- Bernina L450/L460: Swiss build quality, excellent stitch finish.
At this tier, you’re buying time savings (fast threading) and reliability (decades of life with maintenance).
Industrial ($2000+)
For commercial sewing operations. Most home sewers shouldn’t consider these — they’re loud, bulky, and overbuilt for home use.
Cover stitch machines — the related cousin
A cover stitch machine is a separate machine (or sometimes a combination serger/cover-stitch machine) that produces the parallel double-row hem stitching seen on T-shirt hems, sweatshirt cuffs, and athletic wear. It’s not the same as a serger; the stitch is fundamentally different.
If you sew lots of knit garments and want professional-looking hems, a cover stitch machine is the next purchase after a serger. Cheaper combination serger/cover-stitch machines exist (Brother 2340CV) but are sometimes finicky compared to dedicated cover stitch machines (Janome CoverPro).
For most beginners, this is years away. Mention is worth filing for later.
Setting up a new serger
The first hours with a new serger involve:
- Reading the manual cover-to-cover. Twice. Sergers are more model-specific than regular sewing machines.
- Practising threading. With the included thread cones, repeatedly thread the machine until you can do it from memory. Threading is most of the learning curve.
- Sewing test seams on scrap. Adjust tension, stitch length, and differential feed for different fabrics. Take notes on settings that worked.

A note on thread
Sergers work better with cone thread (large spools, 3000+ metres) than with regular spools. Cones feed more smoothly off the back of the machine. Most sergers come with starter cones; you’ll buy refills as you go.
Use polyester serger thread (Maxi-Lock, Coats overlock, Mettler) — not regular all-purpose sewing thread. Serger thread is finer and runs smoother through the high-speed loopers.
Closing thought
A serger is an upgrade, not a starting point. If you sew knits regularly, sew in volume, or care about ready-to-wear-quality finishes inside your garments, the upgrade is worth it. If you mostly sew wovens, sew occasionally, or work in lightweight fabrics where French seams are appropriate, a regular sewing machine handles your needs indefinitely.
If you do buy one, the Brother 1034D at the entry-level price point or a Juki/Babylock air-threading model at the mid-tier are the safe choices for most home sewers.
