Understanding Fabric Grain: Lengthwise, Crosswise, and Bias Explained
A complete guide to fabric grain — the three grainlines, how to identify them, why grain matters for fit, and how to cut on grain or on the bias.
Fabric grain is one of those concepts that sounds simple (“just align the pattern with the grainline”) but takes time to truly understand. The grain is the direction the fabric is woven — and that direction determines how the fabric behaves when worn. A garment cut off-grain twists on the body, hangs unevenly, and develops drag lines that no amount of careful sewing can fix.

What grain is
Woven fabric is made of two sets of threads:
- Lengthwise threads (warp): run the length of the fabric, parallel to the selvedge.
- Crosswise threads (weft): run across the fabric, perpendicular to the selvedge.
These two sets interlace to form the woven structure. The directions they run define the fabric’s grain.
The three grainlines are:
- Lengthwise grain (with the warp): parallel to the selvedge.
- Crosswise grain (with the weft): perpendicular to the selvedge.
- Bias: the diagonal, at 45° to both the warp and weft.
Each grainline has different properties, and patterns specify which grainline pieces should align with.
Properties of each grainline
Lengthwise grain
- Most stable: minimal stretch.
- Strongest: warp threads typically have higher thread count and tension during weaving.
- Most often used for the length of garments: shirts, dresses, trousers cut so the lengthwise grain runs vertically on the body.
Lengthwise grain is the default direction for most garment pattern pieces. The pattern’s grainline arrow indicates the lengthwise direction.
Crosswise grain
- Slightly more stretch than lengthwise.
- Less strong but still stable.
- Sometimes used for length in specific designs (e.g., horizontally striped fabric where you want the stripes to run vertically on the body).
The crosswise grain is the direction of the cut edge from the bolt — when you buy a metre of fabric, you’re getting a strip cut along the crosswise grain.
Bias
- Maximum stretch: significantly more than lengthwise or crosswise.
- Drapes fluidly: bias-cut fabric falls in soft folds rather than holding shape.
- Used for specific design effects: bias-cut dresses, bias-cut trims, bias binding.
True bias is at 45° to both warp and weft. Anything between 0 and 45° is partial bias, with stretch and drape between full lengthwise and full bias.
Why grain direction matters
A garment cut on the wrong grain misbehaves in specific ways:
Twisting
A skirt cut off-grain (with the lengthwise grain not perfectly vertical) will twist on the body — the side seams won’t hang straight; the hem won’t be level.
Stretching out of shape
If a section is cut on partial bias, that area stretches under wear and doesn’t recover. A neckline cut off-grain widens; a sleeve cap cut off-grain droops.
Visible distortion
Striped or printed fabric cut off-grain shows the misalignment immediately — stripes that should be vertical run at a slight angle.
Hem unevenness
A skirt or trouser leg cut off-grain has a hem that ends up uneven, even after carefully measuring during construction.
These issues compound over time and washing. A garment that fits acceptably when first sewn may twist progressively worse with each wash if it’s slightly off-grain.
How to identify the grain on fabric
The selvedge
The selvedge is the tightly-woven, finished edge along the lengths of the fabric. It runs parallel to the lengthwise grain.
To identify the lengthwise grain: find the selvedge. The grain runs along this edge.
When fabric has no selvedge
Some fabrics (cut-to-order pieces, scrap fabric, fabric that’s been pre-washed and the selvedge removed) don’t have visible selvedges. To find the grain:
- Pull a thread: pull a single thread from one cut edge. Pulling along the lengthwise grain pulls one continuous thread; pulling along the crosswise grain pulls a different (also continuous) thread.
- Look at the weave: most weaves are noticeably tighter or denser in one direction. Lengthwise threads are typically more tightly tensioned.
- Stretch test: gently stretch the fabric in both directions. The direction with more stretch is typically crosswise; the firmer direction is lengthwise.
Squaring the fabric
Even with a clear selvedge, fabric may not be square — meaning the crosswise grain isn’t perfectly perpendicular to the lengthwise grain. This happens when the weave was distorted during manufacturing or storage.
To square fabric:
- Lay flat on a large surface.
- Pull a single thread along the cut edge to find the true crosswise grain. Trim along the line where the thread came from.
- Compare: if the trimmed edge is perpendicular to the selvedge, the fabric is square.
- If not, dampen and gently pull the fabric diagonally to align it. Pin to the surface to hold while it dries (a method called “blocking”).

Reading the grainline on a pattern
Every pattern piece has a grainline arrow — typically a long arrow with arrowheads at both ends. This arrow indicates the lengthwise grain direction for that piece.
When laying out the pattern on fabric:
- Position the pattern piece so the grainline arrow runs parallel to the selvedge.
- Measure from each end of the arrow to the selvedge — the distances should be equal.
- If they’re not equal, the piece is off-grain and needs repositioning.
This “measure both ends” check is critical. Eyeballing alignment is unreliable.
Cutting on the bias
Some pattern pieces are deliberately cut on the bias — particularly:
- Bias-cut skirts and dresses for fluid drape (think 1930s Hollywood).
- Bias-cut trim for cleaner curves around necklines and armholes.
- Bias binding that follows curves smoothly.
Cutting on the bias means orienting the pattern piece’s grainline at 45° to the selvedge, rather than parallel. This requires more fabric (bias-cut pattern pieces don’t tessellate as efficiently).
Properties of bias-cut garments
- Fluid drape: bias-cut dresses fall and move in ways straight-grain can’t replicate.
- Slight contour-following: bias fabric stretches around the body, conforming closely.
- Uneven hemming over time: bias garments can grow longer over weeks of hanging, requiring re-hemming.
- Difficult to construct: bias seams stretch during sewing, often requiring stabiliser tape or careful handling.
Beginner sewers should avoid bias-cut patterns until they have several straight-grain projects under their belt. The construction is genuinely harder.
Cutting on the crosswise grain
Less common than lengthwise, but used in specific situations:
Stripe direction
If the fabric has horizontal stripes that you want to run vertically on the garment, you cut with the lengthwise grain horizontal — meaning the pattern piece is rotated 90° from its standard orientation.
Width considerations
Some fabrics are wider in one direction than the other (e.g., fabric is 110 cm wide selvedge-to-selvedge, but you have many metres of length). Cutting on the crosswise grain may give you a piece that’s wider than the lengthwise dimension allows.
Print direction
If a print is one-directional (e.g., flowers all facing up), the print direction may dictate which grain to align with.
The pattern instructions usually specify when crosswise cutting is intended. Don’t switch between lengthwise and crosswise without a reason; the slight difference in stretch can affect fit.
Grain in knit fabrics
Knits have a different structure than wovens (loops, not interlaced threads), but they still have a grain:
- Vertical “wales”: columns of stitches running vertically. This is the equivalent of lengthwise grain.
- Horizontal “courses”: rows of stitches running horizontally. The equivalent of crosswise grain.
For knits, the lengthwise grain (wales) typically has less stretch than the crosswise grain (courses). Pattern pieces should be aligned with this stretch direction in mind.

Common grain mistakes
Cutting carelessly without checking grain
Tempting when the fabric is already laid out and you’re eager to start. The 60 seconds it takes to verify the grain saves hours of frustration in fitting.
Misreading the grainline arrow
Some grainline arrows have a directional component (e.g., printed pile fabrics like velvet have a nap direction). Read the pattern instructions for any directional notes on grainline arrows.
Using “off-grain” fabric
Some fabric (especially cheap polyester) is woven and finished off-grain at the factory. The selvedge isn’t actually parallel to the lengthwise threads.
If you suspect this:
- Pull a thread to find the true grain.
- Compare to the selvedge.
- If they don’t match, the fabric is permanently off-grain and likely won’t sew well. Return or use for non-fit-critical projects.
Cutting striped fabric without grain awareness

Confusing grain with print direction
The grain is the direction of the threads. The print direction is how the design is oriented on the fabric. These are independent — you can have a print running parallel to the grain (most common) or perpendicular (occasionally) or even diagonally.
When cutting, the grain alignment matters first; the print direction matters second.
