Sustainable Fabric Sourcing: Where to Buy Eco-Friendly Sewing Fabric
What 'sustainable fabric' actually means, which materials are genuinely better, and where to buy them. With honest notes on the trade-offs and greenwashing to watch for.
The home sewing community is increasingly interested in where fabric comes from. Conventional cotton uses heavy pesticides; polyester sheds microplastics; viscose can come from forest destruction. The shift toward sewing your own clothes is partly driven by the desire to make better choices than fast fashion offers — but the fabric industry’s environmental claims are often confusing, and the difference between genuinely better choices and marketing language is real.
This guide cuts through the noise. It covers what “sustainable” actually means in practice, which fibres are genuinely better than alternatives, where to source them, and the trade-offs involved. The goal isn’t to make every purchase perfect — it’s to help you make slightly better choices when you have the option.
What “sustainable” can actually mean
The word covers several different concerns:
- Environmental impact in production: water use, pesticide use, land use, energy, emissions.
- Environmental impact in use: microplastic shedding, longevity, ability to biodegrade.
- Labour conditions: fair wages, safe working conditions across the supply chain.
- Animal welfare: for animal-derived fibres (wool, silk, leather).
- End-of-life: recyclability, biodegradability.
Different fabrics excel and fail on different axes. A “sustainable” fabric in one sense (organic cotton, low pesticide use) might still have high water use. A “sustainable” fabric in another sense (recycled polyester) might still shed microplastics. There’s no single fabric that’s optimal across every dimension.
Fibres ranked by environmental honesty

Better choices (with caveats)
Organic cotton
Reduces pesticide use significantly compared to conventional cotton, and avoids synthetic fertilizers. Improves soil health and water quality where it’s grown.
Caveats: still water-intensive; not all “organic” certification is equally rigorous. Look for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification — the most credible standard.
Best uses: T-shirts, basic woven cottons, lightweight knits.
Linen and hemp
Both are bast fibres (made from plant stems). Hemp and linen plants require minimal water, grow without much pesticide, and improve soil. The fibres are durable and biodegradable.
Caveats: processing (turning fibre into yarn) varies in environmental impact. Some processing uses chemical retting (chemicals that break down the plant); some uses water retting (more traditional and less polluting).
Best uses: linen for shirts, dresses, summer wear. Hemp for harder-wearing garments, blends with cotton.
Tencel (lyocell)
A wood-pulp-derived fibre made by the Austrian company Lenzing using a closed-loop process — the chemicals used in production are recovered and reused, dramatically reducing environmental impact compared to viscose.
Caveats: still requires wood pulp from trees, though Lenzing claims responsible sourcing. Performance is excellent — drapes well, breathes, resists wrinkles.
Best uses: drapey blouses, dresses, lining fabrics.
Modal (similar production to lyocell)
Also Lenzing-produced, made from beech wood. Soft, drapey, durable.
Caveats: similar tradeoffs to Tencel. Brand-name Modal from Lenzing is more reliable than generic modal.
Best uses: T-shirts, knit garments, lining.
Wool (from regenerative or organic sources)
Naturally biodegradable, durable, breathable. Sustainable when sourced from regenerative farms or organic suppliers.
Caveats: animal welfare concerns (mulesing, etc.) vary by source. Responsible Wool Standard certification addresses some of these.
Best uses: warm garments, suiting, knit garments.
Recycled polyester
Made from recycled PET bottles or post-consumer textile waste. Reduces virgin polyester demand.
Caveats: still synthetic, still sheds microplastics in washing. The “recycled” claim doesn’t undo the microplastic problem. Still preferable to virgin polyester for most applications.
Best uses: athletic wear, technical fabrics, blends.
Mixed picture
Conventional cotton
Heavily pesticide-dependent (cotton uses ~16% of world insecticide despite being only 2.4% of arable land). Water-intensive. But durable, biodegradable, comfortable, and recyclable.
The dominant fibre in home sewing. Better than many alternatives in some ways, worse in others.
Bamboo (rayon from bamboo)
Widely marketed as “sustainable bamboo.” Reality check: most “bamboo” fabric is actually viscose rayon made by chemically processing bamboo with the same harsh process used for any viscose. The bamboo plant itself is sustainable; the processing typically isn’t.
Caveats: real bamboo linen (mechanically processed, like flax) is rare and expensive. Bamboo rayon is just labelled rayon with bamboo source.
Best uses: avoid as a “sustainable” claim. If you like the fabric, fine; just don’t believe the marketing.
Viscose / rayon (conventional)
Made from wood pulp through chemically intensive processes that release toxic byproducts. Some is sourced from ancient forests.
Caveats: Lenzing’s Tencel/Modal use better processes; check the brand name. Canopy is an organization that audits viscose suppliers for forest sustainability.
Silk
Natural, biodegradable, durable. But silkworms are killed in conventional production, and silk is energy-intensive to produce.
Caveats: “peace silk” or “ahimsa silk” allows the moth to emerge before the cocoon is unravelled — slightly more humane but produces lower-quality fibre. Wild silk (tussar) is non-cultivated and considered more sustainable.
Worse choices
Conventional polyester (virgin)
High emissions in production, sheds microplastics throughout its life, doesn’t biodegrade. Avoid where possible; use recycled polyester instead.
Acrylic
Microplastic-shedding, energy-intensive production, can’t be easily recycled. The synthetic fibre with arguably the worst overall profile.
Conventional viscose / rayon
Often sourced from endangered forests; processing can release toxic chemicals. Tencel and Modal are better alternatives within the same fibre family.
Conventional leather
Tanning processes are often heavily polluting. Some “vegetable tanned” leather is processed more cleanly. Cactus leather, mushroom leather, and other plant-based alternatives exist but are still niche.
Where to buy sustainable fabric
The mainstream fabric stores carry some sustainable options but not consistently. For broader selection, specialty retailers offer better curation.

Independent fabric stores
Many independent fabric stores curate selections more carefully than big-box stores. Ask about sourcing — the staff usually knows which fabrics are organic, recycled, or otherwise certified.
Deadstock and remnant sellers
Fabric leftover from production runs at clothing brands. The fabric itself may be conventional, but it’s reusing what would otherwise go to landfill. Brands like FABSCRAP (NYC), Queen of Raw (online marketplace), and Workaday Handmade sell deadstock.
Vintage and thrifted fabric
Estate sales, thrift stores, and vintage shops sometimes carry beautiful old fabric. Reusing existing fabric has the lowest environmental cost.
Repurposed garments
Cutting up second-hand clothing for fabric is the most direct form of textile reuse. Especially good for denim (used jeans), wool (used coats), and silk (used scarves).
Reading certifications
A few certifications that mean something:
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): the most credible organic certification. Audits the full supply chain.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100: certifies the fabric is free of harmful substances. Doesn’t address sustainability per se but ensures the textile is safe to wear.
- Bluesign: addresses chemical use and worker safety in textile production. Stricter than most.
- Fair Trade Certified: addresses labour conditions in the supply chain.
- Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) / Responsible Mohair Standard (RMS): animal welfare for wool and mohair.
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for cellulose-based fibres (Tencel, Modal): forest sourcing.
Certifications without these specific names should be viewed skeptically — vague terms like “eco-friendly” or “natural” without specific certifications often mean nothing.
The uncomfortable trade-offs
Honesty about sustainable sewing requires acknowledging:
Sustainable fabric costs more
Organic cotton typically runs 30–100% more than conventional. Tencel costs more than viscose. Hemp costs more than cotton. The premium reflects real production cost differences, not just marketing.
For sewers on a budget, the choice often becomes: fewer projects in better fabric, or more projects in conventional fabric. Both are reasonable choices.
Pre-treatment matters more

Garment longevity is the biggest factor
The most environmentally meaningful thing about a garment isn’t usually its fibre — it’s how long you wear it. A polyester shirt worn 200 times has lower per-wear environmental cost than an organic cotton shirt worn 5 times. Making garments you actually love and wear matters more than choosing the perfect fibre.
This is one of the strongest sustainability arguments for home sewing in general: garments fitted to you, in fabric you chose, are worn longer than fast fashion alternatives.
Microplastics are real but unavoidable in current synthetics

A practical sustainable sewing approach
Realistic principles:
- Start with what you have. Use existing fabric stash before buying new.
- Buy intentionally. Plan projects before buying fabric, not vice versa. Stash buying is the most common source of unsustainable fabric purchases.
- Choose better when you can afford to. When buying new, choose certified organic, Tencel, linen, or hemp over conventional alternatives.
- Buy from transparent suppliers. Companies that share sourcing information are usually more accountable.
- Make garments to last. Pattern-fit carefully, sew strong seams, choose styles that you’ll wear in 5 years.
- Mend instead of replacing. Fixing what you’ve already made keeps it out of landfills.
- Consider the project’s purpose. A muslin doesn’t need to be made of organic linen; a final garment might.

Sustainable fabric sourcing is a spectrum, not a binary. Every choice involves trade-offs, every claim deserves scrutiny, and the “perfect” fabric usually doesn’t exist. The realistic goal is “better than I would have chosen otherwise” — not perfection.
