Interfacing Types and Uses: A Complete Reference

Interfacing is the invisible material that gives garments their structure. The crisp collar of a button-front shirt, the sturdy waistband of a pair of trousers, the substantial body of a blazer — all rely on interfacing inside the fabric to hold their shape. Without interfacing, fabric flops; with the right interfacing, fabric behaves.
The challenge: interfacing isn’t one product. There are dozens of types — fusible vs sew-in, woven vs knit vs non-woven, light vs medium vs heavy, black vs white — and choosing the wrong one produces visible defects in the finished garment. A too-stiff interfacing makes a soft fabric stiff. A too-light interfacing fails to support a structural element. A non-woven interfacing on a fabric that needed woven interfacing creates a noticeable difference in drape.

What interfacing actually does
Interfacing is a layer of supportive material applied to the wrong side of fabric, typically in:
- Collars and collar stands: provides crispness.
- Cuffs: maintains shape.

- Waistbands: prevents stretching out.
- Pocket openings: prevents stretch and tearing.

The two main attachment methods
Fusible interfacing
Has a heat-activated adhesive on one side. Apply with an iron, and it bonds to the fabric.

- Bonds permanently if applied correctly.
- Provides consistent stiffness throughout.
- Most modern interfacing is fusible.
Cons
- Can pull away from the fabric over time, especially with heavy washing.
- Adhesive can show as a slight stiffness or “papery” feel through some fabrics.
- Can’t be re-fused if you make a mistake (you have to start over).
- Ironing too hot can scorch or melt the adhesive.
Sew-in interfacing
Has no adhesive. Stitched into the seam allowance with the garment fabric.

- Doesn’t change the hand (drape) of fabric as much as fusible.
- More durable through heavy washing.

- Couture-level interfacing is almost always sew-in.
Cons
- More labour-intensive.
- Can shift during sewing.

The fabric structure of interfacing
Interfacing comes in three structural types, each with different drape and behaviour:
Woven interfacing
Made on a loom, with warp and weft threads, just like fabric. Has a clear grain.
Pros
- Drapes naturally — like a layer of additional fabric.
- Behaves like fabric in seams and curves.
- Can be cut on the bias for additional drape.
- Maintains breathability.
Cons
- More expensive.
- Less consistent stiffness than non-woven.
When to use
- Tailored garments (jackets, blazers).
- Garments where the interfacing’s drape matters (collars, cuffs that need to follow curves).
- Natural-fibre garments where you want the interfacing to behave like the fabric.
Knit interfacing
Knitted, like jersey fabric, with stretch.
Pros
- Stretches with the fabric — essential for knit garments.
- Soft hand.
- Maintains drape.
Cons
- More expensive than non-woven.
- Less crisp than woven for structural areas.
When to use
- Knit garments (T-shirts, dresses, jersey-fabric tops).
- Adding stability without removing stretch.
- Necklines and shoulders on knit garments.
Non-woven interfacing
Made by bonding fibres together (not woven, not knitted). Has no grain.
Pros
- Cheap.
- Available in a wide range of weights.
- Can be cut in any direction without grain considerations.
- Dimensionally stable.
Cons
- Stiffer hand than woven or knit.
- Doesn’t drape like fabric.
- Can feel “papery.”
When to use
- Craft projects, bags, structured items.
- Bag handles, stiffening for purse bottoms.
- Beginner garment projects where economy matters.
For garments with visible interfacing effect (like a soft collar), woven interfacing produces a more refined result. For purely structural support (like a bag handle), non-woven is fine.
The weight of interfacing
Within each structural type, interfacing comes in different weights:
Lightweight
For fine fabrics and fluid garments. Adds minimal stiffness; provides subtle support without changing the fabric’s character.

The pattern instructions usually specify a weight. When in doubt, lighter is generally safer — heavyweight interfacing changes the fabric’s character more than lightweight does.
How to choose interfacing
A starting framework:
1. Match the fabric weight
- Light fabric (cotton lawn, silk): use lightweight interfacing.
- Medium fabric (quilting cotton, linen, light denim): medium-weight interfacing.
- Heavy fabric (denim, canvas, wool coat): medium to heavyweight interfacing.
A medium fabric with heavyweight interfacing produces a stiff, “cardboard-like” result. A heavy fabric with lightweight interfacing has minimal effect.
2. Match the structure type
- For wovens: typically use woven interfacing for refined garments, non-woven for craft/structural use.
- For knits: use knit interfacing.
- For mixed/decorative use: experiment with samples.
3. Consider the application
- Collar and cuff: medium-weight woven interfacing.
- Waistband: medium-weight (woven for refined, non-woven for casual).
- Pocket opening: lightweight (just enough to stabilise).
- Bag bottom: heavyweight non-woven.
- Knit T-shirt neckline: lightweight knit interfacing.
4. Test before committing
Always test fuse a small piece of interfacing onto a fabric scrap before applying to the actual project. Press, observe the result, adjust if needed.
Applying fusible interfacing
The process matters. Here’s how to do it correctly:
Step 1: Cut the interfacing
Cut interfacing to the same shape as the fabric piece (or trim the seam allowances slightly off the interfacing — the interfacing should not extend into the seam allowances).
The pattern’s interfacing piece markings or instructions usually specify which areas need interfacing.
Step 2: Position correctly
Place the interfacing on the wrong side of the fabric, with the adhesive (slightly bumpy) side facing the fabric’s wrong side.
The smooth side faces up.
Step 3: Cover with a press cloth
Use a damp press cloth between the iron and the interfacing. This:
- Prevents adhesive sticking to the iron’s soleplate.
- Helps the adhesive activate at the right temperature.
- Adds steam that improves the bond.
Step 4: Press, don’t slide
Hold the iron in place for the time specified by the interfacing manufacturer (typically 10–15 seconds), then lift and move to the next area. Don’t slide the iron back and forth — this can shift the interfacing or distort the fabric.
Step 5: Let cool, then verify
Allow the fabric to cool before handling. Check the bond by gently lifting an edge:
- If interfacing peels off easily: not enough heat, time, or steam. Re-press.
- If solidly bonded: ready for sewing.

Applying sew-in interfacing
Step 1: Pin or baste in place
Pin the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric piece, aligning all edges. For better stability, hand-baste rather than just pinning.
Step 2: Treat as a single layer during construction
The fabric and interfacing are now one piece. Sew through both layers when joining to other pattern pieces.
Step 3: Trim seams carefully
When trimming seam allowances after construction, cut through both fabric and interfacing.
The result: the interfacing stays in place permanently, attached only at the seam lines.
Common interfacing mistakes
Using the wrong weight
Heavyweight interfacing on lightweight fabric makes the area stiff and changes drape. Always match weight to the fabric and to the application.
Pressing without a press cloth
Adhesive can stick to your iron, ruining both the iron and the interfacing. Always use a press cloth.
Sliding instead of pressing
Sliding the iron over fusible interfacing can shift it. Press in place, lift, move to the next area.
Not testing first
Different fabric+interfacing combinations behave differently. Test on scrap before committing.
Forgetting to interface critical areas
Patterns sometimes don’t explicitly call for interfacing in places where it would help (e.g., pocket openings). Adding interfacing in unexpected places can improve durability.
Interfacing through seam allowances
Most patterns cut interfacing slightly smaller than the fabric piece — the interfacing stops at the seam line, not the cut edge. This reduces bulk in seams.
